Psoriasis In The Sun

With the summer in full swing, it’s natural to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sunshine. While for some people, natural sunshine can benefit psoriasis, sun safety is super important for everyone, especially as treatments like topicals, systemics and biologics can make your skin more sun sensitive.

Tips to manage psoriasis while staying safe in the sun

1) When exposed to sunlight it’s important to wear sunscreen with high SPF (the NHS recommends SPF 30 or above) and apply it 20 – 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Regularly reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

2) Avoid peak sunlight hours and spend time in the shade between 11am-3pm when the sun is at its hottest.

3) Regularly moisturise after being out in the sun to keep skin hydrated. Be mindful that air-conditioned rooms and cars can dry out your skin.

4) Wear light clothing in pale colours and breathable fabrics such as cotton, to reduce sweating and stay cool. Wear a hat, sunglasses and consider wearing long tops and trousers to protect your skin from the sun.

5) Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and skin hydrated.

6) Make a splash! Swimming in salt water can remove dead skin and improve the appearance of psoriasis. Although, salt water and chlorine can dry out the skin, so remember to rinse off and moisturise after swimming.

7) Prepare for holidays by packing appropriate clothing, moisturisers, hair products, OTC items, and enough prescription medication. Be sure to consult your GP or dermatologist for prescription refills or advice on traveling with a biologic.

However you decide to make the most of the good weather, we hope you have a wonderful time and most importantly stay safe in the sun!
